Once again we headed down the A30 to Cornwall for our summer camp at Coverack. There’s a decision to be made between going somewhere we haven’t been before, or going back to a place where we have a lot of local friends, a quiet secluded campsite to ourselves 10 minutes walk from the beach, no shortage of activities and other things to do, and plenty of very pleasant places to do nothing very much at all when it suits.

After everyone had a chance to say their bit, Coverack won again. This year we had a longer camp than normal as we ran Silver DofE expeditions for nine people on the Penwith Moors north of Penzance before the rest of the Unit joined us on the Saturday for the weeks camp.

SUMMER CAMP AT COVERACK AUGUST 2008

We didn’t fare any better than the rest if the UK did this summer, as we had rain at some stage during the day for 10 out of 11 days - not exactly beaching weather! We did our best to ignore it although towards the end of the week it was getting to the point where absolutely nothing seemed to be dry any more.

A lot of what we did involved the sea, so we were wet anyway - surfing at Gwithian, sea kayaking at Falmouth, and surf skis at Coverack for example, and our day at the Cornwall Scouts Smuggler08 camp at Stithians was one of the wettest and windiest of the week with the rain sweeping across the site almost horizontally.

We somehow always manage to have someone’s birthday when we’re away at camp - It was Alex’s turn this year - and it’s as good an excuse as any for a party. We have some photos taken at the party, but you don’t seriously expect to see them on here, do you ? ;-)

Between Dave, Jacqui, Mat, and the Unit we’ve made a selection of the more publishable photos which you can have a look at by clicking here
