This is the third time we’ve been kneeboarding at WakeMK. For the uninitiated, kneeboarding
consists of being towed around a lake on an endless steel wire loop whilst kneeling
on a board about the size of a large tea-tray. The first problem is to take off from
the landing stage whilst staying on the board as you do 0 to 20mph instantaneously
- or that’s what it feels like. If you do achieve lift-off, the first straight down
the lake is good but you’re steadily getting closer to the first bend, which is not
so good. Getting round it involves using your knees to steer outwards (don’t fall
off) aiming between two marker buoys and then hang on for a sudden acceleration as
the wire and your tow rope go round the pulley and take you off in a totally different
direction. Manage that round five bends and you’re back where you started - easy
really.
We never seem to get a sunny evening when we go but it’s good fun anyway and the
people who run WakeMK are a very Scout-friendly bunch- thanks guys.
For any other ESU within reach of Willen Lake - give this a go! WakeMK operates most
of the year but if you want an evening session it’s best between May and August when
the evenings are light.
