At present, September 2009, we’re 25 strong and for the first time for a couple of
years we’ve got more guys (16) than girls (9) covering the whole Explorer age range
from some newly arrived ex-
We’ve got 4 leaders, Dave who started it all in 2002 as one of the earliest Explorer Units to be up and running, Jacqui who made the fatal mistake of asking Dave “Do you need a hand?” in 2005, and Jacqui’s son Mat who joined in 2008. Ben, a former Badger Hill Scout, joined us this summer.
This site is partly general stuff about Explorers and partly the story of what we’ve done recently, what we’re doing now, and what we’d like to be doing in the future.

Welcome to Brocks website
In July 2008 we changed our name from Badger Hill to Brocks Explorer Scout Unit, or Brocks E.S.U. for short. If you didn’t know, “Brock” is a traditional country name for an older, wiser, craftier Badger .......which sums up Brocks Explorers quite neatly. ‘Nuff said.....
We’re still the same Explorers with the same leaders and we still have the link built up over six years with our partner group at Badger Hill.

The photo above was taken by one or our original Explorers Tammy, who is now a professional photographer, at our recent “Wine’n’Dine” to celebrate our 7th birthday. We know we’re not in Explorer Uniform but hey, it’s a good pic! Thanks Tammy.

Lucy, on the left here, is at the forefront of the Scout Association publicity surrounding the 2009 census figures which show a major increase in girls in Scouting, particularly in Explorers, and particularly in Bedfordshire. Until this summer when Rose, Caitlin, Emma, Sophie, and Amy all went off to Uni or college we had more girls than guys but we’re still above the average boy/girl ratio for Explorer Units.
Lucy was picked to accompany the former Chief Scout, Peter Duncan, doing the rounds
of TV and Radio interviews on Monday 27 April and also featured in the publicity
surrounding the handover to Bear Grylls. She and Andrew, another of our YSPs, knew
that he was the new Chief Scout about 6 weeks before the announcement but were sworn
to secrecy :-
