At present, April 2009, we’re 27 strong and we’ve got more girls  - 14 than guys - 13, covering the whole Explorer age range from some newly arrived ex-Scouts to some real oldies who are planning a Gold DofE expedition before they retire and maybe start their own Network later this  year.

We’ve got 3 leaders, Dave who started it all in 2002 as one of the earliest Explorer Units to be up and running, Jacqui who made the fatal mistake of asking Dave “Do you need a hand?” in 2005, and Jacqui’s son Mat who joined in 2008.

This site is partly general stuff about Explorers and partly the story of what we’ve done recently, what we’re doing now, and what we’d like to be doing in the future.

To contact us, please email webmaster@brocks-explorers.org.uk and we’ll get back to you.

Welcome to Brocks website

In July 2008 we changed our name from Badger Hill to Brocks Explorer Scout Unit, or Brocks E.S.U. for short. If you didn’t know, “Brock” is a traditional country name for an older, wiser, craftier Badger .......which sums up Brocks Explorers quite neatly. ‘Nuff said.....

We’re still the same Explorers with the same leaders and we still have the link built up over six years with our partner group at Badger Hill.

The photo above was taken by one or our original Explorers Tammy, who is now a professional photographer, at our recent “Wine’n’Dine” to celebrate our 7th birthday. We know we’re not in Explorer Uniform but hey, it’s a good pic! Thanks Tammy.

The Legal Stuff

Lucy, on the left here, is at the forefront of the Scout Association publicity surrounding the 2009 census figures which show a major increase in girls in Scouting, particularly in Explorers, and particularly in Bedfordshire. Brocks has more girls than guys at present and as far as we know is the first Explorer Unit in UK where this is so, although we never planned it to happen :-) but from the census figures it looks like we may just be leading the way.

Lucy was picked to accompany the Chief Scout, Peter Duncan, doing the rounds of TV and Radio interviews on Monday 27 April.
